Walking and Cycling Grants
Walking and Cycling Grants London (WCGL) and the Community Ideas Grants (CIG) are grants programmes funded by Transport for London in partnership with The London Marathon Foundation and administered by Groundwork London.
We fund grants of up to three years to community groups and organisations, to deliver projects and programmes that remove the barriers to walking and cycling and enable all communities to enjoy the benefits of active travel.
Our aims:
· Increase walking and cycling in London (including new, lapsed or occasional cyclists)
· Increase confidence in walking and cycling
· Increase walking and cycling frequency
· Make cycle ownership more accessible
· Introduce exercise via walking and cycling to people who are particularly inactive
· Reduce social isolation and get people involved and together in their local community
Projects create confidence in participants, provide upskilling opportunities, enable greater physical, social and economic mobility, improve physical and mental health, reduce social exclusion and strengthen communities.
Since we began in 2015, we’ve awarded over £2.5m in grants, supported over 339 projects across all 33 London boroughs, with over sixty nine thousand participants benefitting from the scheme.
If you have an idea to inspire and support people in your community to walk or cycle more often and more safely, we may be able to support you! Contact Groundwork London at [email protected].
Funding Available
Walking and Cycling Grants London
WCGL funds grants of up to £10,000 over three years to community groups and organisations, to create projects and programmes that allow all communities across London to enjoy the benefits of walking and cycling.
We work with groups whose participants need encouragement and support to get them walking and cycling.
Type of grants
Organisations can apply for up to £10,000 for projects that run for up to three years:
· year one – up to £5,000
· year two – up to £3,000
· year three – up to £2,000
You can only apply for year two and year three grants at the same time as the year one grant.
At the end of each year, we assess your project to decide whether agreed outcomes or targets were achieved. Funding for years two and three will be released when targets have been met.
Community Ideas Grants
The Community Ideas Grants fund grants of up to £5,000 for one year projects to smaller community groups, charities and social enterprises who may not have applied for a grant or run a community project before. You can pick from a template list of previously successful walking or cycling project ideas to run in your community, and will receive more support throughout the application and project delivery period.
Type of grant
Organisations can apply for up to £5,000 for projects that run over one year. At the end of the delivery year you can either continue your project based on your sustainability plan, or apply for top-up funding for further years, where your project would then become part of the Walking and Cycling Grants London scheme.
Applications are judged against the scoring criteria set. Funding is limited so we urge applicants to consider whether they need to submit more than one, as we aim to support as many organisations as possible. For advice and guidance contact the grants administrators at [email protected].
